Chapters as a strip inside the book list
In the serif book list, each book shows its chapter count. Psalms is open, and its chapters appear as a single horizontal row of numbers (13 to 18 visible) inside the list, between Psalms and Ecclesiastes.

Design takeaway
A horizontal strip keeps the book list on one screen, but only a few chapters are visible at once. For books with many chapters, test how people find a distant chapter and know there are more.
