Rocks that cry out
A logo study for Bible & Faith Patterns
“If they remain silent, the very stones will cry out” (Luke 19:40). Programmers like to say a microchip is a rock we tricked into thinking. This study turns a faceted silicon rock slowly in the light. When a facet mirrors the light towards you, it shines as a cross, the way sunlight on the Berlin TV tower’s steel sphere does, and the way a photographer’s star filter shapes a sun star.
What it is made of
- An irregular convex rock, generated from fixed points so every visitor sees the same one, wider at the base and flattened at both ends.
- A metallic, blue-grey material with a faint interference sheen, like a polished silicon wafer, lit by a studio environment.
- Each frame, the facet that mirrors the light into the camera receives a Latin-cross glint; its brightness follows how exactly it mirrors.
- It pauses when off screen, and shows one still frame, turned to its brightest cross, for people who prefer reduced motion.
A study, not yet the site’s logo. The cross shines best on a dark ground; on white, the beams beyond the rock disappear.
