Find a relevant pattern
Start from a purpose
Start with the person’s purpose. Choose the situation closest to your product decision. These are overlapping purposes, not types of people or stages of spiritual maturity.
The same person may listen during a commute, follow a guided reflection in the evening and prepare to teach at the weekend. Receiving, following guidance and directing one’s own reading can each serve a meaningful purpose. More interaction is not automatically better engagement.
See the same passage designed for three purposes. Compare the assumptions before choosing a pattern.
Before choosing: consider familiarity with Scripture, language and literacy, disability and access needs, available time, connectivity, emotional circumstances and whether the device is shared. These conditions can change which option helps.
Receive and listen
A commute, a rest or a hands-free encounter with Scripture.
Reduce visual demands while preserving control over pace, repetition and stopping. Listening is not a lesser form of engagement.
The player works without the screen
Support listening as a complete mode of use.
Research-informed design proposal18 · Audio and guided practicePlayback and reading positions can differ
Follow the narration without forcing the reader to follow every movement.
Research-informed design proposalReceive today’s reading
A daily passage, watchword, lectionary reading or devotional chosen by others.
Offer a clear starting point without requiring enrolment. Receiving a reading can be an active choice; explain its origin and keep an archive separate from a backlog.
A bounded passage with a route to wider context
Choose the reading unit by the task while keeping its boundaries and context visible.

Research-informed design proposalFollow the church year
Today’s observance, a season or preparation for a service.
Name the calendar and community it belongs to. Help people enter the practice without turning the church year into a personal backlog.
Orient within a liturgical calendar
Make the tradition, date and observance clear before offering readings or prayer.
Research-informed design proposal93 · Habits and spiritual formationMake room for prayer
Compare a prayer text, a guided sequence and a quiet space without requiring personal input.
Research-informed design proposalFollow a practice
A chosen reading rhythm, devotional or guided reflection.
Provide orientation without turning an interruption into debt. Make the schedule and the freedom to change it clear.
Choose a devotional format
Compare a continuous reading, a sequence of cards and a chaptered audio session.

Research-informed design proposal39 · Habits and spiritual formationA flexible reading rhythm
Help someone choose a reading rhythm—and adjust it when life changes.
Proposed hypothesisExplore a question
A reader wants to understand a word, passage or competing explanation.
Keep evidence and context available. An answer should not quietly replace the reader’s question with the system’s agenda.
A reference opens at a deliberate destination
Choose the content scope, landing position and temporary cue separately.
Research-informed design proposal78 · Study and annotationsCitations in AI answers
A citation is a route to supporting material, with source type and limitations visible.
Research-informed design proposalRead independently
Someone chooses their own passage, pace and depth.
Support sustained reading and easy return. Independence should not require dismissing a stream of recommendations.
A bounded passage with a route to wider context
Choose the reading unit by the task while keeping its boundaries and context visible.
Research-informed design proposal03 · Reading and ScriptureFootnotes without losing place
Inspect a note and return to the exact reading anchor.
Research-informed design proposalStudy and prepare
A teaching task, close comparison or theological investigation.
Support comparison and durable notes while keeping edition, source and interpretation distinct.

Research-informed design proposalEngage with others
A shared reading practice, discussion or prayer.
Make the audience and participation expectations explicit. A shared rhythm need not mean public progress.
When the purpose changes
Compare daily offerings, bounded plans and self-directed reading. Content selection, commitment, calendar and progress are separate design choices.
Let a listener open the text, a guided reader explore wider context, and a researcher return to quiet reading without losing their place. Do not infer a permanent persona from one session.
These routes are editorial proposals. Read the engagement framework and research limits, or work through reading plans and pressure.
